Golden Justice
I chose Lady Justice as a representative for the theme of my art pieces. I love the message that Lady Justice says with her sword representing authority and the power to punish injustice. The justice scale she holds demonstrates fairness and opportunity, but you can also notice how the scale is imbalanced. The scale is imbalanced to show the impartiality of the court’s decisions. She also wears a blindfold that shows how justice is unbiased and should not be based on a person’s appearance or ways they identify. I don’t really have any personal connections with lady justice, but I do believe that the government pretends to be blind to justice when they know they are being biased with their decisions.
I threw two bowls to represent the imbalanced justice scale and painted lady justice onto a plate. All three were thrown on the wheel and glazed with the same gold glaze. The stands I made were hand-built and glazed with mottled blue and metallic black. The pieces as a whole come together to make a scale-like structure and a plate that has lady justice painted on it. Though I don’t really have any personal connections with my theme, I still have empathy for those who have experiences that connect with the message of Lady Justice and I want to represent that through my art.
